Anurans of the Parque Estadual do Mirador, a remnant of Cerrado in the state of Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Andrade,Etielle Barroso de; Weber,Luiz Norberto; Leite,José Roberto de Souza Almeida.
Abstract The Cerrado is one of the most threatened biomes in Brazil. It is estimated that much of its original vegetation has been replaced by some type of human use. This is quite worrying, mainly in the northern part where the number of wildlife inventories is insufficient and creates the false impression of low diversity in the region. The Parque Estadual do Mirador-PEM, located in the south-central region of the state of Maranhão, presents vegetation typical of the Cerrado biome and corresponds to one of 46 priority areas for conservation in the state. Herein, we describe the species richness and composition of the anurofauna from the PEM and analyze the influence of different types of vegetation in its formation. Our inventory was conducted from...

Brito,Leomara Pessoa; Araújo Lacerda,José Dantas; Araújo Soares,Cintia; Monteiro Júnior,Franklin Luís Carlos; Souza,Magno Chagas; Aguiar Fonseca e Souza,Áurea Izabel; Lima,Clenes Cunha; Rodrigues,Marcos.
Abstract This study aimed to verify the impact of different methods of overcoming dormancy in the germination of Ipomoea cavalcantei seeds, in addition to surveying the biometric data of its seeds and fruits. Ripe fruits were randomly collected from the species' habitat, which is a unique ecosystem characterized by small vegetation and iron outcrops. For the biometric analyses, the weight, moisture content, length, width, and thickness of 100 fruits and 100 seeds were determined. To analyse the efficiency of overcoming seed dormancy, six different treatments were tested, including mechanical, physical, and chemical methods, and the resultant germinability, average germination time, and germination speed index were evaluated. Further, in order to estimate...

Chiarani,Eduardo; Fontana,Carla Suertegaray.
Abstract Parque Estadual do Tainhas - PET (Tainhas State Park) is a protected area with significant extensions of natural grasslands located in highland grasslands of northeastern Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, and recognized as an Important Bird Area. Our aim was to record the bird species richness of PET with a greater sampling effort than previous studies at the site, including unpublished data such as occurrence status of most species and evidence of breeding of some of them in the park. We surveyed birds between 2012 and 2018 performing aleatory trails covering mainly the central portion of PET (1,500 ha). We also added records from published studies. We listed 208 species, of which 203 were recorded during our fieldwork (including 18 species of...

Changes in the structure of fish assemblages in streams along an undisturbed-impacted gradient, upper Paraná River basin, Central Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Dias,Alesandra Martins; Tejerina-Garro,Francisco Leonardo.
The João Leite River is located in the upper Paraná basin, Central Brazil. It drains areas covered by Cerrado vegetation interspersed with urban and agricultural areas. This study aims to asses changes of the fish assembleges structure along a undisturbed-impacted gradient in ten stream stretches using ecological descriptors, a similarity index and the abundance-biomass relationship (ABC curves). The fish were collected during the dry period using electrofishing gear in stretches of 50 m. Results show that the environmental variation observed along the undisturbed-impacted gradient considered influences on fish assemblage structure. Both richness and diversity differences between fish assemblages are partially influenced by stream stretch orthonian order...

Xavier,Josias Henrique de Amorim; Cordeiro,Cesar Augusto Marcelino Mendes; Tenório,Gabrielle Dantas; Diniz,Aline de Farias; Paulo Júnior,Eugenio Pacelli Nunes; Rosa,Ricardo S.; Rosa,Ierecê Lucena.
Reefs, mangroves and seagrass biotopes often occur in close association, forming a complex and highly productive ecosystem that provide significant ecologic and economic goods and services. Different anthropogenic disturbances are increasingly affecting these tropical coastal habitats leading to growing conservation concern. In this field-based study, we used a visual census technique (belt transects 50 m x 2 m) to investigate the interactions between fishes and microhabitats at the Mamanguape Mangrove-Reef system, NE Brazil. Overall, 144 belt transects were performed from October 2007 to September 2008 to assess the structure of the fish assemblage. Fish trophic groups and life stage (juveniles and adults) were recorded according to literature, the...

Galling insects are bioindicators of environmental quality in a Conservation Unit Acta Botanica
Santana,André Portugal; Isaias,Rosy Mary dos Santos.
Galls are well distributed across the World and among plant families. Their diversity can support the status of conservation of an area as an urban park, once inventories are presented. These inventories also help to understand the morphological patterns of the galls, based on their most common shape, color, host botanical families, inducers and galled organs. This study is about an inventory of galls at Parque Estadual Serra Verde, Brazil. This conservation unit is an urban park strongly anthropized in a transition area of Cerrado and Mata Atlântica. Galls from four different trails were observed, and collected monthly during one year. The terminology morphospecies was used to distinguish the galls because the identification of the inducers were not...

Management of gillnet fisheries in the south coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MENDONÇA,JOCEMAR T.; PEREIRA,ALINEIDE L.C..
Gillnetting is one of the most practiced fishing methods adopted in the South of Brazil and has been increasingly expanding over the last years. This paper presents the characterization of the activity and discusses its management, in accordance to results from the discussions on the development of regulations on net fisheries in the South Coast Marine Protected Area (APAMLS) in the state of São Paulo. Gillnet fleets are formed by small-scale boats, with low autonomy, and lower fishing capacity, when compared to boats from other ports in the South and Southeast. However, the number of fishing units is high, reaching 1,709 units operating in the South coast of São Paulo in 2010. This kind of fleet uses several types of gillnets, and the activity may be...

Spatial partition of artificial structures by fish at the surroundings of the conservation unit - Parque Estadual da Ilha Anchieta, SP, Brazil BABT
Cunningham,Patricia Teresa Monteiro; Saul,Andreia de Carvalho.
The aim of this work was to study the spatial partition dynamics of fish at artificial structures. Holed structured concrete blocks were used to construct eight identical artificial structures and disposed between 3m-6m depths. Installation was made in two steps during 1996 (May/June and November/December) and daily observations were carried out during 30 consecutive days SCUBA diving. The artificial reef areas were used in discriminated ways by the fish community and was most probably influenced by several factor, mainly biotic. The results of the Krustal-Wallis test led to the refutation of the hypothesis that the artificial structure spaces were shared and randomly used by fish.

The distribution of the freshwater crab Fredius reflexifrons (Ortmann, 1897) (Brachyura, Pseudothelphusidae) in an Environmental Protection Area of the Planalto da Ibiapaba, Northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANTOS,LIVANIO C. DOS; NASCIMENTO,WHANDENSON M. DO; MATOS,HELAINE S.; PINHEIRO,ALLYSSON P.; SILVA,JOSÉ R.F..
Abstract Freshwater crabs are important components of aquatic ecosystems; however, their distributions are restricted because of characteristics of their life history, which hinder conservation strategies. Fredius reflexifrons is a widely distributed freshwater crab of the Amazon basin with relictual occurrences in small wetlands on the Planalto da Ibiapaba in Northeastern Brazil. Habitat degradation, destruction of forest patches, channeling of water bodies, and the use of land for legume cropping can seriously impact the species by leading to the extinction of its relic populations, which have limited distributions in the Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA; Environmental Protection Area) Bica do Ipu of the Planalto da Ibiapaba. The objectives of this study...

The protected areas system in Brazil as a baseline condition for wetlands management and fish conservancy: the example of the Pantanal National Park Neotropical Ichthyology
Polaz,Carla N. M.; Ferreira,Fabio C.; Petrere Júnior,Miguel.
ABSTRACT Considering the need for the Brazilian government to develop tools for environmental monitoring for biodiversity conservancy purposes in the national protected areas system, this paper focuses on determining reference site metrics (or baselines) for adapting the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) based on the fish assemblages in the Pantanal National Park (PNP). The habitats in the PNP were grouped into four categories: main rivers, corixos (channels connecting the floodplain), permanent bays, and temporary bays. Fish samplings were performed at 12 points during the dry season (Oct-Nov 2010 and 2011). 146 fish species were identified from the total 18,954 individuals collected with standardized fishing gear. There was no association between the...
